IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO START WORKING ON YOUR COMMUNITY SERVICE Points...PLEASE SEE THE GUIDELINES POSTED BELOW!!
PLEASE NOTE THE COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT CHANGES!!
A community service project is mandated in order to be an active participant in NJHS. According to its Constitution and Governance, each member of NJHS must complete a service project each year. The project you choose needs to have the following characteristics. It must fulfill a need within the school or community; it must have the support of the school’s administration; it must be appropriate and educationally defensible, and it must be well planned, organized, and executed.
NJHS members are obligated to complete a minimum of 5 points of community service. Your points do not need to be completed all at one time, nor all at the same location. Your community service points and service form must be completed and returned to Google Classroom no later than April 6, 2021, by midnight. Please be advised that you will NOT be eligible for NJHS if you do not complete the 5 points of community service and/or turn in the form passed the due date.
Although you are free to responsibly choose and participate in an individual community service project that reflects your particular talents and interests, we recommend that you select carefully to ensure that your hours will count. We recommend that you volunteer with a non-profit agency or service-based organization that benefits the community. Examples of acceptable hours, include, volunteering at a local food pantry, public library, church, senior center or nursing home, or assisting a community group, such as the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Rotary or Kiwanis Club. You may choose to volunteer at the Rancho Simi Recreation Center or for a youth sports organization. Unacceptable hours, include, assisting a teacher at VVMS, babysitting, working for a family member, or working within the home.
If you are unsure where to begin, several links to community organizations with ongoing volunteer opportunities have been provided.
The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding middle school students. More than just an honor roll, NJHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character and Citizenship. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginnings in 1929.
